Happy 4th of July: Stay Safe, Have Fun This Weekend

July 4th is this weekend, and that means cookouts, fireworks, lake days, parades, and all the things that make summer feel like summer. From everyone here at SkyTechSport, we want to say it loud and clear: Happy Independence Day! We hope your weekend is filled with laughter, good food, and great company. Before you head out the door, though, take two minutes to read through these simple reminders. Not because we want to put a damper on anything — quite the opposite. A little preparation is exactly what keeps the good times rolling.

Use the Buddy System at Big Gatherings

Whether you're heading to a packed waterfront fireworks show, a crowded neighborhood block party, or a busy state park, large gatherings have a way of swallowing people up. Before you arrive anywhere with a big crowd, take thirty seconds to pair up with someone. Designate a meeting point — a specific food truck, a park bench, the entrance gate — so that if your group gets separated, everyone knows exactly where to go. This matters especially if you have kids, elderly family members, or anyone who might feel overwhelmed in a crowd. Agree on it before you need it, and you'll never have to scramble for it.

The buddy system isn't just for kids at summer camp. It's a genuinely smart habit for adults at any big event. Keep an eye on your people, check in regularly, and make sure nobody is drifting off alone into unfamiliar territory — especially after dark around fireworks or near open water.

Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable This Weekend

July 4th weekend tends to mean long hours outdoors — sometimes six, eight, even ten hours under a July sun. UV exposure doesn't take a holiday, and neither should your sunscreen routine. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher before you step outside, and reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or heavy sweating. Don't forget the easy-to-miss spots: the back of your neck, the tops of your ears, the backs of your hands, and your feet if you're going barefoot. A wide-brim hat and UV-blocking sunglasses go a long way toward protecting your face and eyes throughout the day.

If you're spending time on the water — boating, paddleboarding, swimming — be aware that water and sand reflect UV rays and can actually intensify your exposure. Shade isn't always available on the water, so pack extra sunscreen and make a habit of reapplying before you think you need to, not after your skin starts feeling warm.

Wear the Right Gear for What You're Doing

We talk about proper gear a lot in the context of skiing, snowboarding, and athletic training — and the same principle holds true in summer. The gear that matches your activity is always the right choice. If you're riding bikes or scooters, helmets are a must regardless of age. If you're on the water, life jackets save lives — full stop. If you're hiking or trail running, wear appropriate footwear that gives you the ankle support and grip the terrain demands. Flip-flops are great for the pool deck; they're not great for a rocky trail or a crowded festival where your feet can get stepped on.

Dressing for the activity also means dressing for the heat. Light-colored, moisture-wicking fabrics keep your body temperature manageable. Stay away from heavy cotton on hot days if you're going to be active — it holds sweat and makes it harder for your body to cool itself. And always carry water. Dehydration can creep up on you fast when you're having fun in the heat.

Fireworks: Leave Them to the Professionals

Professional fireworks displays are genuinely spectacular, and they exist for a reason — trained crews handle dangerous materials so that the rest of us can enjoy the show safely from a distance. Consumer fireworks, even the ones that seem harmless, cause thousands of injuries every year, many of them to bystanders rather than the person handling them. If your area has a public fireworks display, make that your plan. Find a good spot, set up your chairs and blankets early, and enjoy the show. If you're in an area where fireworks are legal and you choose to use them, read every label carefully, keep a bucket of water nearby, never allow children to handle them, and never relight a dud.

Stay Hydrated and Check on Your Neighbors

Heat exhaustion is more common than most people realize during summer holiday weekends, especially when the combination of physical activity, alcohol, and high temperatures adds up over the course of a long day. Drink water consistently throughout the day — don't wait until you feel thirsty. If you're consuming alcohol, alternate with water and make sure you have a safe way home. And take a moment to check on the people around you. Elderly neighbors, young children, and pets are especially vulnerable to heat. If someone looks pale, dizzy, or confused, get them into shade and cool them down, and don't hesitate to call for help if you're unsure.
