Ski Trip Essentials: The Gear You Absolutely Need (And What to Skip)

Don’t Overpack—Here’s What You Actually Need for the Slopes.

Packing for a ski trip can be overwhelming, especially if you're unsure what’s essential and what’s just extra weight in your bag. To help you pack smart, we’ve put together a must-have gear list—and a few things you can leave behind.

Must-Have Ski Trip Gear

1. The Right Ski Clothing

Skiing means being outside in cold, windy, and sometimes wet conditions. The key to staying warm is layering properly.

Base Layers– Moisture-wicking tops and bottoms (avoid cotton!)

  • Base Layers– Moisture-wicking tops and bottoms (avoid cotton!)
  • Mid Layer – Insulating fleece or lightweight down jacket
  • Outer Shell– Waterproof ski jacket and pants
  • Gloves or Mittens – Waterproof and insulated
  • Neck Gaiter or Balaclava – Protects your face from wind and cold
  • Wool Socks – Keeps feet warm and dry

2. Ski & Snowboard Gear

If you're renting gear at the resort, you can skip most of this, but if you have your own:

  • Skis or Snowboard
  • Ski Boots or Snowboard Boots
  • Poles (if skiing)
  • Helmet (safety first!)
  • Goggles (for sun and snow glare)

3. Extras That Make a Big Difference

  • Sunscreen & Lip Balm – Snow reflects UV rays, and wind dries out your skin
  • Hand & Toe Warmers – Great for extremely cold days
  • Ski Lock– Protects your gear from theft at busy resorts
  • Small Backpack or Hydration Pack – Carry snacks, water, and extra layers

What to Skip (Save Space in Your Bag!)

  • Too Many Layers – Overdressing can lead to overheating. Stick to a good layering system.
  • Bulky Snow Boots – If you’re only skiing and not doing much walking, your après-ski shoes should be lightweight and packable.
  • Expensive Fashion Goggles– High-end designer goggles aren’t necessary—function over fashion!
  • Giant Suitcase of Gear – Most resorts have gear rental shops with quality equipment, so if you’re not picky, renting is an easy option.
  • Multiple Jackets – A single high-quality ski jacket works for both skiing and après-ski activities.
